While using AI ethically in research is certainly exciting, it is somewhat of a new, unexplored frontier. There are exciting possibilities around every corner, but there are also hidden traps and issues you need to watch out for.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is probably the most talked-about issue. This is especially true when discussing AI ethics in academic writing. It’s incredibly easy to ask AI to write a paragraph or summarize an article, and voila, you have text.
The problem is…that text isn’t yours. Using AI-generated content without proper attribution is the same as copying from a book or website.
For instance, if you’re writing a literature review and use an AI to summarize five key papers, simply pasting those summaries into your document amounts to plagiarism, plain and simple. The ethical approach is to use the AI summary to deepen your own understanding, then write the review in your own words, and finish off by citing all the original sources.
Bias
Again, there’s also the sneaky problem of bias in datasets and AI models. AI systems learn from the information we give them, and that information tends to be filled with biases.
Let’s say, for instance, that you’re using artificial intelligence to analyze historical texts so you can understand societal views on leadership.
